When you say lettuce most people think Iceburg head lettuce. In reality lettuce has a lot of varieties but all of the varieties of lettuce can be narrowed into two groups; head lettuce (such as Great Lakes 118 and Romaine) and leaf lettuce (such as Black Seeded Simpson and Prizehead ). Lettuce seeds can be direct seeded as early as soil can be worked or started indoors in early spring. When direct seeding be careful to be sparing with the seed as they are very small and they will need to be thinned no matter how sparing you are. One benefit to starting them early indoors is that you can plant the seeds in individual pots and space them properly when planting them outside. Just be sure to harden the seedlings off before planting them by putting them outside in ever increasing increments for about two weeks. When the lettuce gets to two inches it’s time to thin them to the desired spacing. Head type lettuce will need a greater distance for spacing. Leaf type lettuce can be harvested earlier than head lettuce by cutting the side leaves or they can be cut to the ground when the plant gets larger like with head lettuce.
